Has the nature of warfare, indeed its very conceptualization, changed? How has the emergence of the concept of the ‘network’ influenced the understanding and conduct of war? Is Network-Centric Warfare a ‘new kind of warfare’? What does it mean to ‘become dangerous’ in the context of Network-Centric Warfare? Is the emergence of Network-Centric Warfare signaling a shift from the Foucauldian concept of ‘disciplinary societies’ to the Deleuzian concept of ‘control societies’? These are some of the issues that this monograph addresses.MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. A significant sub-text of the monograph focuses on the emerging importance of ‘information’ in an increasingly networked society. ![]() These four themes, coupled with the unprecedented rise of information technologies, are indicative of the multi-sited emergence of Network-Centric Warfare and are discussed in some detail. Chapter 3 focuses on network-centric operations (NCO), including the relationship of NCO to the overarching Joint Operations Concepts (JOpsC), the NCO experience in Afghanistan and Iraq, the development of the NCO Conceptual Framework, and the conduct of NCO case studies. An examination of NCW as an emerging theory of war, its relationship to the four domains of Information Age warfare, the growing evidence of its benefits, and the warfighting advantages it can provide are examined in Chapter 2. A brief description of NCW, including its origins, its central role in force transformation, its tenets and principles, and an implementation strategy, are provided in Chapter 1.
